Simples Fire Cider Tonic is our version of a popular folk cold and flu, super immune remedy.  Iterations of this recipe, combining herbs, apple cider vinegar and often honey date back to Medieval Europe, and there is a reason that this powerful tonic has stood the test of time and only grown in popularity. It’s potent medicine. It is a natural antibiotic, anti-viral, anti-fungal anti-parasitic, anti-candida, immune strengthening and is a circulation booster. It is a tonic you should always have on hand, and it really does work wonders for a variety of ailments. It can be taken several times a day for acute illness or daily as a preventative tonic.

Fire Cider Tonic Benefits

There are many benefits to using Simples Fire Cider Tonic, at the first sign of a cold it can be taken as shots or mixed with warm water and honey.as a tea.  It really can knock a bug right out of you and does wonders to soothe a sore throat and tame a cough.

But it’s also great as a daily preventive tonic., to keep you healthy . I add it to salad dressings, soups and stews for both flavor and added health and immunity benefit.

So what is all the fuss about the name?  While versions of this remedy have a long history, the adding of hot spice, and the coining of the name “Fire Cider” is relatively new and was created by Rosemary Gladstar a world- renowned herbalist who has been teaching about this remedy for decades. You can read more about Rosemary’s story here.

Recently, some entrepreneurs began mass marketing their version of the product, and had the name “Fire Cider” trademarked.  They began taking legal action against small herbalists who continued to sell their remedy by the universally known generic name, Fire Cider. Hence the “freefirecider” movement was born.

So whatever you choose to call it, here’s a recipe!

Fire Cider Tonic Recipe

While recipes vary from maker to maker and from season to season, the basics remain the same, a base of onions, garlic, ginger, horseradish, and chili peppers are infused for weeks, or even months in organic apple cider vinegar.  We like to add additional immune supporting plants such as fresh citrus, rose hips, astragalus, reishi, chaga,, elderberry, turmeric, burdock and fresh oregano rosemary and thyme. But as we make our Simples Fire Cider in small batches and with what is in season, no batch is ever the same.

You can find many recipes online and I have never made the same recipe twice. I recently made a batch adding beets and blood oranges. It gave the Fire Tonic a great color and it was a new addition that I had never tried and I loved it.  So there’s always room for exploration.

Fire Cider Tonic Ingredients:

  • 1 Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small head finely chopped garlic
  • 1/2 cup grated ginger
  • ½ half cup grated horseradish root
  • Chopped fresh hot pepper to taste

Other ideas of things to add:

  • Fresh grated Turmeric
  • Fresh grated Burdock
  • Lemons or other citrus
  • Echinacea
  • Cinnamon
  • Rosehips
  • Elderberry
  • Hawthorn berry
  • Reishi
  • Chaga
  • Fresh herbs, rosemary, oregano, parsley and thyme
  • Beets

Use your imagination and your intuition. There is no wrong way.

Add all ingredients to a mason jar and fill to brim with organic apple cider vinegar. Let it sit in a dark place for several weeks. I like to let it brew for 6 weeks but you can use it as early as 2 weeks.
